A significant amount of that time, money, and engineering created and accelerated development of many things that did end up helping people:

Computers and related technology, including the Internet
Food preservation
Metallurgy
Plastics
Non-military explosives
Emergency medicine
Mass production of medicines like quinine and penicillin
Jet engines
GPS
Paint and other protective coatings
Recycling
Nuclear technology, eventually adapted for power generation and medical use
Digital photography
Radio technology
Radar
Sonar
Microwave ovens
Some kind of adhesive strip used to prevent water intrusion on things like ammo boxes, can't remember the name of that product
NASA and all of their wonderful inventions during the Cold War

Sadly, the cost of this progress was far more than just money and time due to the parts of human nature that are greed and ego, which sometimes leads to war. Maybe some day we will get out of that cycle.
