Would have been MUCH easier to cut one rail at a tie and put a pusher charge on the other rail to bend it in. The idea is the rail bent in is on the side AWAY from where the train is coming. That will catch a wheel and shove it to the side, instant wreck. You could even wait until just before the engine got there to blow it so there would be nothing they could do about it.
