My only problem with a caltrop shape would be if it was accidentally dropped and you didn't know it it could be stepped on. which might require a trip to the ER. My steel toe boots also have a steel shank and strip plates in the soles but sharp objects can still puncture my wife always wears tennis shoes and doesn't always see what she is stepping on even as much as I try to maintain good house keeping in and around work areas I always worry about her stepping on some potentially injurious object.
I am thinking more along the lines of making several with a 1/4 or 3/8" male square to fit extensions or sockets on and possibly with the female hex for the ubiquitous hex bits we use, or both having one sticking out from center on both sides, The protrusions would not be sharp or long enough to puncture one's shoes unless a hex bit were installed and it landed point up, while still making them easy to pick up plus add a wide range of additional uses.
