Mr. Hoeffer; Excellent documentation on this project, one to follow closely. I've been after a used #215 in D1-6 closer awhile; few offered look like heck. Suspect runout would elicit a more harsh response upon mount and test. Not acceptable on full size Pacemaker lathe that can attain 2000 rpm. Thus, self made is only logical alternate. Choices are limited within heat treating plans, not critical in limited use, for leaded stock. Positive a minimal film of high pressure paste lubricant will preserve surface of taper to close collet and threads. Eliminating the screw 'key' will distribute wear, collet should activate readily. Who knows how many R8 mills run with that sheared off? Are you going to operate with tommy bar/ spanner/ handwheel?. Note to others; max recommended deflection of 5C, and like collets is .005 or .006. Collets are springs and deform, losing the cylindrical & concentric form to load and hold properly. For odd stock use other increments of size than 64ths; thousandths, metric or 'emergency' versions, Split bushings are often used too. That allows grip on features too narrow to support machining, plus an external stop or eccentricity when needed.
