    Sunset Machine's Tools

    Another new guy

I'm a retired, rusty-old-machine-tools guy. Planer, shaper, grinder, mills and lathes. Most of my work has been on old farming equipment. But we're here to make tools, and mine are ugly, minimal and needing to be prettied up. So let's see what goes on here..

    Located in Eastern Washington state.

Hi Sunset Machine - welcome to HomemadeTools.net

Lots of ugly (and extremely useful) tool makers here. What kind of tools have you built?

Well, there's this flycutter of mine..

I've never fooled with carbide tooling beyond the brazed stuff, so I'm curious on how to hold an insert - the angles, little screws and whatnot. I've a 10" flyctter with 3/8" HSS that I'd like to convert to carbide. Any tricks to mounting an insert, or do I just nail it to the end of a stick? And of course, which insert...?

    Hi Sunset Machine,

    Welcome!

Yep, plenty of ugly tool makers around here - and probably some ugly tools, too! Function before form, though…

If you post your flycutter questions to our Help Me Build subforum, you're sure to receive some useful input.

You guys are scaring me - that's just a hunk bolted to an arbor. Here it is in another form - an adjustable flycutter.
