I like your Bender but I also like your little quote " For you, Tommy Atkins, the war is over". I had a friend captured at Maleme Field in Crete and his German Paratrooper captor said the same words to him, omitting the Tommy Atkins part. The captor then immediately shot the soldier in the slit trench next to him for reaching to pull himself out of the trench, but reaching in the direction of a rifle lying there. Both soldiers were 3/4 buried by the preceding bombardment. His advice to me was if you are ever captured, do exactly as you are told, move slowly and think before you move. Perhaps surprisingly he had great respect for his captors who had been professional soldiers before the war. It was the young drafted recruits that were the problem. We don't know how lucky we are.
