RICK! You are me are on the same wavelength there bud. I'm in the middle of building a MPG for my CNC machine. Doesn't use any potentiometers though.
Great, it's really nice and looks very convenient. There is an other way also, a little bit more complicated to implement though, it's using an old HDD drive, open it and use the disk itself as a wheel, you can spin it with a finger, and you need to hook up the motor with a bit of circuitry in order to turn it into an incremental encoder, bidirectional, and then it can be processed with an Arduino to turn it into a pulse generator for instance. In that case you are not limited by reaching the end of track of a potentiometer.
But it's way more complicated and your solution is for sure much more effective and practical.
I vote for it !
Can I post Amazon links here? These are the ones I've purchased in the past. They are of excellent quality. The detents feel just as good as the expensive Fanuc factory handwheel that came with my machine. It's a 5v part that provides quadrature output (plus inverted outputs, in case you're machining in a lightning storm).
