I wonder if most of the tools back then were like this, or were the majority simple everyday tools without the embellishments.
Maybe the simple ones didn't survive because they weren't special enough to be saved.
Perhaps the only existing examples are the artistic ones, that would throw off our perceptions of the way things were made historically.
