They probably did, people can always find something to complain about.

Honestly, I think that people in those days had more pressing things to worry about than their "rights" were being taken away. They had real issues. It fascinates me to see people who have way more of everything that they need, and way more stuff that they don't even need, complain that they don't have enough stuff. Or complain that their freedoms are being "suppressed" when they have no idea what suppression, or lack of freedom REALLY is.
