What are those brushes made out of?

The first brushes were actual wire "brushes" made of small wires. These wore out easily and they developed graphic blocks to do the same job.

Mark of a dedicated work force, hired for ability and willingness to learn -then demonstrate it, when many of the 'engineers' had sufficient mechanical background - hands on, and planned obsolescence rated sinful. When you build for longevity, even the machine frame, aka 'skid' can be pointed to with pride.
