I wonder if the blades are powered by a motor being energized by something like slip rings or a commutator, or if the motor is in the base or top and using gears to spin the assembly and the fans via gears.
I bet Frank would know.

I was thinking the same things as you Big Sexy, with one more possibility, could the fans be turning because one of them is mounted slightly off center so that the fans turn because of that imbalance.
