This 1954 flatbed Willys truck was built by Ty84 on Pirate4x4.com.
The impetus for the build was a workaround in California emissions laws. The builder's Ranger wouldn't pass a smog inspection; however, he realized that pre-1976 vehicles in California are exempt from any emissions testing. So, a '54 Willys body was placed on a Ranger frame, and the build was on.
The Ranger's floorboards also replaced the torn-up Willys ones. Ty84 built a fuel tank and fan shroud, and also a custom toolbox made from an old Willys tailgate.
What makes 4x4 builds unique among build threads is that many of them were built to take damage. Build threads often include sad posts detailing an accident or incident that damaged the vehicle. With 4x4 build threads, it's often the opposite, and rollovers are cause for celebration. After Ty84 rolled the vehicle on its side, he said:
"There was no damage when I layed it over, but I built it for the trails so I go into each trip not too worried about hurting it".
