You have to be very careful when reloading ammo. I would think especially 50 cal.

Yes he survived thanks to his Dad being present and getting to a hospital A.S.A.P. It was apparently just about touch and go for a while. There are several YouTube videos about it including from the rifle manufacture that some very unfairly slated. The problem was an old, unknown re-load.

He didn't reload it, it was sold as military surplus. It's a SLAP round. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabote...mor_penetrator They're not supposed to be used in rifle with a muzzle brake, either. His has a muzzle break. It's a high velocity, high pressure round.

Wasn't a reload.

He walks everyone thorough exactly what happened. Including owing his life to his dad.

If someone says something along the lines of...

I'm a guy with a wife and kids who narrowly escaped death doing it, but I'm going to continue risking my life because I really, really enjoy shooting holes in fire hydrants.

is that sufficient evidence to have him committed?

Only if he tried to rebuild the rifle that exploded, instead of buy one designed to shoot cartridges like that!
