In one of Steve Matchett's books he talked about seeing one of those cars running through it's motions in the middle of the night when the pits were otherwise dead quiet.

In the mid 1980's Volvo was working on a system of active suspension. The film I saw, a car running a slalom course banked more like a speed boat than a car.
There was a large computer in the back seat, and the front passenger had another smaller computer on his lap. Even at that early stage of development, most of the racing sanctioning bodies had already declared that such a system would be illegal on the race track.
