If they had been coming out of the hole there would be 2 sets of tongs being used to break the joint. Most of the rigs I was around we used both tongs making or breaking because our rigs did not have a locking rotary table

I was working as daylight driller once when we showed up to relive morning tower the first thing I noticed was the rig was dogged off not turning to the right as it should have been the mud pump sitting there just chugging away and zero pressure on the gage and a very high volume of mud returning to the pits. I asked the morning tower driller what was going on We got stuck then when it broke loose we lost pressure so we dogged it off.
How long ago did this happen I asked.
about 4 hours he said.
And you didn't call Fred the tool pusher I asked?
He would have made us trip out of the hole he said
Yeah and now you think that my crew is going to do what you should have done well I got news for you, you are still going to make the trip so you might as well get started but before you do pull up a couple of feet I want to get a read on the string weight.
Why he asked. Because I want to determine if we are going to have to go fishing or not.
It turned out that the change over stub had twisted off right above the collars which meant we had to locate an a fishing tool to put on the end of the string and try an get it to slip over the collars to retrieve them.
What a holiday that turned out to be a 25,000 lb set of collars with an 8 5/8 button bit stuck on bottom the bore hole with a 4 hour wash out 2500 feet down hole

Unfamiliar with most of the jargon. But damned if I didn't understand everything you just said.

Going in or coming out we'd use both sets of tongs, even with a locking rotary. Pipe got bigger and required higher torque's and the slips and rotary wouldn't hold it.

Making up using only 1 set of tongs adds a lot of stress and undue wear to the slips it also puts wear on the drill string with the exception of Hydrill's slim hole junk that over diameter pin and box section on the ends of the drill stem was not put there just to make the pipe look funny.
Yep and when pulling or setting collars you put the wedding band on them. The old saying goes if we have to go fishing for those collars the first thing I better see when they come out is the wedding band or there will be hell o pay

A mouse hole rig, quite possibly only a 3 man drill crew maybe 4 man with the oiler doubling as the derrick hand when making a trip
drill pipe raised with a sand line from the pipe box or rack up the Vee door then lowered into the mouse hole pipe with a spring or bladder cushion bottom.
there might not even be a monkey board for standing pipe when making a trip if not then each joint has to be returned to the mouse hole as they come out of the ground the connection opened then picked up with the sand line and guided back down the vee door as another joint is pulled from the hole.
If there is a monkey board then the swivel will be set aside plugged into the mouse hole the bails and elevators will be placed on the hook pipe pulled out of the hole the derrick hand will slot it in the fingers of the monkey board then open the elevators so the process can be repeated .It will get real crowded real fast when there is 1000s of feet of drill stem standing
