Going in or coming out we'd use both sets of tongs, even with a locking rotary. Pipe got bigger and required higher torque's and the slips and rotary wouldn't hold it.

Making up using only 1 set of tongs adds a lot of stress and undue wear to the slips it also puts wear on the drill string with the exception of Hydrill's slim hole junk that over diameter pin and box section on the ends of the drill stem was not put there just to make the pipe look funny.
Yep and when pulling or setting collars you put the wedding band on them. The old saying goes if we have to go fishing for those collars the first thing I better see when they come out is the wedding band or there will be hell o pay
