Why not compressed air? Using a liquid seems like an easy way to ruin the drywall.

Compressed air won't get it clean. I trash mine every couple of years and replace them with new ones since I don't trust the liquid either, but compressed air just doesn't work. Mold and/or mildew, dust, dirt, and pet fur/dander, plus the stuff that falls off of humans...

Interesting. I have three wall mounted ductless splits. Two of them are 10 years old. Hasn't been a problem for me yet. I clean the filters and blast the fins with air and they've been clean as a whistle. No pets though, and the humidity here is fairly low most of the time. That might have something to do with it.
