It's like the analog tach that AvE looked at in 2019. I had never seen such a thing. Solutions that don't involve microcontrollers are so much cooler.

We used to have reed type frequency meters like that on the old gensets.

Reed type resonance meters are still available, one is the Sticht. They also produced handheld cone (RPM) or tire (FPM) driven variety for readings.
BTW/ FWIW there are still operable vintage handheld analog contact tachometers by SW [Stewart-Warner] Starrett, Jaeger and others, reasonably priced.
I wouldn't discount the older non-contact photocell-reflective tape versions either, such as Pioneer.
Sometimes, close to rotating equipment, is too close for comfort.

In midst of setting up kit for electric motor testing; rotation checker, insulation test megger, tachometer, portable ammeters, contact thermometers etc. Personally, threads like this expand range of interests, so posting that array might be worthwhile?

Go for it, I'd like to see that, I'm sure others would also.

FWIW, I have a 1000v megger, a phase rotation tester, a few analogue MMs, a bunch of DMMs and a couple of clamp on ammeters.

My exposure to motor work is due to the pump shop; most WAY larger hp and physically than I'm concerned with. Mine are 440v 3ph 60hz except two 50's, primarily spindle and feed drives, largest at 10hp. Mine have sat a long time, so insulation is first concern, fortunately not from vermin gnawing conductors. With none ever wired as a group, rotation logically is next to address. Idea of continuity preparation, before energizing the first volt or amp, is worthwhile.

Sounds as two of us can initiate that thread, and attract more input.
