    Nice post. This method is also used for "quick and dirty" testing of car aerodynamics, even now.

    Used to put pieces of clear leader from audio cassette tapes (remember those) on our sails back in the 70's when racing in light winds. Put them on after we launched, and took them off before we beached after a race. Was so fun to sail through a group of idle boats because their skippers could not read the slight breeze.

    They still use similar things on the aerodynamic flights of newly designed business jets too. Nothing beats simple when trying to determine where laminar flow breaks into turbulent over an airfoil.

    For a wing, perfectly reasonable. Enhances characteristics in any mode of flight short of full stall.
    But vortex scabs all over a semi? No matter what, 10-12 mpg is it pal.
