When reading the title, my first thought was how the heck would a... oooohhh, oxygen bottles!

I wonder if that was a Merc Ambo? There were a series of Merc Ambo fires in the UK ~10 years ago, all put down to diesel engine system failures IIRC. I know we hated Merc chassis based Ambo's 25 years ago whilst crewing them, had to be run-in for 10-15K miles on 'slow' work before going onto the front-line emergency work as the engines were prone to failure if not treated gently to start with, still a number blew up in use, quality German engineering my arse.
