    Angled Half Nut

This article was the joint effort of Larry Rudd and myself. Starting with the “Smart Nut” manufactured by Rod Grantham, we modified the idea a bit. It was written for those new to the metal working hobby.

The Angled Half Nut slides on a threaded rod yet locks securely when tightened. They are easy to make, just hard to design and analyze. Almost half of the article is analysis if you are a math geek.

Didn't even know these things existed! Though I wouldn't use these myself (for safety reasons), this post is much appreciated in that I learned something new today.

The warning on page 2 does present the limitations of this design:

"We do not recommend using the Angled Half Nut in applications involving safety.
It is designed for easy install and remove but does not have the strength of a full
nut. In a single test, a 3/8-16 Angled Half Nut machined into 1" thick 6061 failed
at a torque of 225 inch pounds. A 3/8-16 regular tapped hole in the same material
    failed at 400 inch pounds."

You'd be surprised as to how much you would use them. You can buy knobs through different places like travers, Enco and such. A lot of places will call them "Quick Change Knobs" and they come in all different sizes from #10 on up. I use them on the belt covers of my 6' mower deck to make taking the covers on and off quicker.

Thanks guys. My main hobbies involve cars and bicycles, so you'd understand my safety concern. But for other purposes, I'd probably begin using them.
