Arduino Software: How long before my battery is dead?

When running an Arduino processor from a battery, it is nice to know when the battery is going to die. You can measure battery voltage but this is a poor indication of how much energy is left in the battery. This article presents a simple circuit that can work with Arduino based software to calculate the energy left in the battery.

Thanks very much, Rick. Your writeup is exceptionally clear and well-written. It will save me a great deal of time the next time I do this. I do it so seldom that I have to rederive the equations each time and I always seem to neglect to preserve them.
