Arduino Software: How long before my battery is dead?

When running an Arduino processor from a battery, it is nice to know when the battery is going to die. You can measure battery voltage but this is a poor indication of how much energy is left in the battery. This article presents a simple circuit that can work with Arduino based software to calculate the energy left in the battery.

Thanks very much, Rick. Your writeup is exceptionally clear and well-written. It will save me a great deal of time the next time I do this. I do it so seldom that I have to rederive the equations each time and I always seem to neglect to preserve them. Having your work in the form of an easily downloaded pdf means it can be saved on my pc. Thanks again for taking the time to do this.
