I have just read an article in
MA • Technology Handbook Robotics
which had a topic title of Improving robot-human relations (B&R). I then pondered the true meaning of AI which in the 1980s was considered that machine learning would lead to machines having a conscience and making calculated decisions by themselves, not the modern AI label which seems to cover anything automated or autonomous.
So if our Robots (thinking mainly of Robotic arms, automated self propelled lawnmowers and the like). If machines become super human and are able to have a conscience then isn't it incumbent upon us to consider their mental and well being, the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy already has Malvin the paranoid android. As we are entering a new era in humanity should we consider our actions towards robots and their feelings being that human mental health issues are now at the forefront of human development and social discussion. We could very easily insult the feelings of automation by being technophobic or by its colour for example, mistreating machines by subjecting them to physical abuse by poor handling or misuse. Nearly every very poor PC on the planet is subject to verbal abuse due to its upbringing as a Windows PC. I strongly feel that we should put procedures in place now which will future proof the behaviour humans exhibit towards machines before its too late. Discuss.
