Someone had to "think" of this, makes my head hurt just thinking about the amount of thinking that went into actually making this.

"Ditto" what Ralph said. There has to be several thousand hours of thinking that went into this clock. Perhaps one persons whole lifetime.

I can not even begin to imagine what kind of mind enhancing drugs it took for someone to dream this up.
Surely it began as a much more mundane device and blossomed from the concept as time went on

If I owned a clock company, and my clock design engineer came to me and said "Hey boss , I came up with a new clock", and I saw that, I would ask him if he invented and built that on his own time. If he said it was on company time with company money, I would tar and feather him and then draw and quarter him.

Not me, The first thing I would do would be to have it sealed in a glass enclosure placed in the center of the company foyer. Then I would aske him for a complete bill of materials, detailed drawings of each and every part, documented assembly instructions, an estimated real time reproduction cost. then confer with production staff as to the feasibility of producing them on a limited basis. Tell marketing to promote it at 100 times the actual cost to reproduce. Something of this intracity and beauty is too valuable to be a one off. once the first copy sold I would give the design build originator a huge bonus and encourage him to come up with something else.
