I highly doubt it is a culture thing but rather the size of peoples brain pans. I see similar activities by persons of every background especially among the young under 20 to 25 crowd, think tide pods, standing in the middle of a highway, swallowing bleach, or carrying signs that read cows are raped for cheese, this sort of activity spans all cultures around the world regardless of ethnicity religion education or financial background.
