    Frank S's Tools
If his intensions were to fracture the rock into smaller pieces, a hydraulic hammer would have been just as fast if not faster.
If his intentions were to actually bore a hole in the rock that process is a little more difficult, an auger is not the best tool for the job, especially in an unsupported uncontained rock. you can't put as much down pressure and need to turn the auger slower. A core drill would be a much better choice of drilling tools.
He may have just needed to break up the rock and the auger was the only tool at his disposal

Or perhaps he was just intending to demonstrate how the machine could cut and drill through rocks.

Bloody weak bit of rock, looks suspiciously like a piece of very soft sandstone. :-)

Yup. Sanstone. I've just spent two days watching a construction crew break 4 bit-retaining bolts, just digging through fill dirt and river rock. That is a SOFT stone.
