I have an idea for your alignment modification. It may not be a good idea, but here it is anyhow.

Make a second sliding tube module like the one that's already there. Weld one to each part of the tool opposite the grabby bits. It would sort of resemble the love child of a double-barrel shotgun and a trombone. It would also give you a better handle to manipulate the tool with one hand like you were.
