Just the blow from the tire grazing his head could have killed him! The truck driver was paying attention, he stopped very fast!

That's why trucks are required to have side guards/underride lateral protective device, to offer effective protection to unprotected road users (pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists) against the risk of falling under the sides of the truck and being caught under the wheels. This truck doesn't have side guards and only have a rear underride impact guard. Canadian rear impact guards are much heavier than their American counterpart, where the Canadian rear bar weights from 200-300 lbs. the American rear bar weighs about 170 lbs.
