I have been a draftsman and a college teacher for nearly 30 years now. I'm not sure if that makes me smart, or compulsively dumb. Sort of like lashing yourself with a stinging nettle for the relief it gives when you stop. I love old hand drafted drawings, but I also have a healthy respect for CAD software. I am concerned that we are forgetting the beauty and function of drafting in favor of quick and careless drawing done by engineers using a CAD system.
I have witnessed whole drafting classes taught without once mentioning a thread pattern, or a bolt pattern.
Hand built tools and vintage machinery are a lovely source of beautifully drawn plans and a valuable technical resource.
