The article about is says the failure was due to a connecting link in one of the cables. The investigation into the fault by DoC and Tuhoe found that the failure was due to a rare manufacturing defect in a link of the cable that snapped.
The "quench crack" was found in laboratory analysis conducted at the University of Canterbury.

I hope everybody is all right. Having traversed over a few back country bridges I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.
