Bringing a coal pick hammer back to life

Recently one of my sisters gave me this old coal pick hammer so I thought it deserved a new handle and a bit of dressing up on the hammer end.
So many of these were used in tandem or 1 guy would hold the pick end of it against a seam of coal while another would hit it with a large sledge hammer.
I ground off the mushroomed part of the head in case I ever want to actually use it I didn't want it shedding shrapnel.

Then I gave it a handle

....and then gave it a handle?
OK, I'll bite; what you call it now?

I haven't any coal picks, but plenty of specialty hammers. I saved 2 mason hammers in what amounts to the same process. Clean up the head, re-point the pick, and buff and varnish stacked-leather-washer handle.
Haven't used [or seen] them in ages.

I think I'll store it next to my chipping hammers,
I have a friend who visits once in a while and always wants to try his hand at welding. I don't know how he does it but the slag on his welds must be at least RC 80 with a tensile strength in the high 80K range. Only guy I ever knew who has broken the point end off of a wooden handle chipping hammer right next to the eye.

The handle was bought for reserve in case of the breakage of one of my 8 or 10 lb sledges.
It fit the eye perfectly so it got cut in half the other half was sanded down to fit in a 4 lb mini sledge
Which means 2 hammers got wood.

Your friend with the bomb proof slag sounds like my stick welding with 6011, or 6010 5p for that matter, I see the welder at the bosses shop pop off peanut shell size pieces of slag with the bare end of the next rod 6010 5p. All ways wondered what I'm doing wrong. Years latter there is still slag often clinging to my welds. Rust proofing I like to think of it if I'm trying to be optimistic.
