There was a time when the observer in Royal Navy Sea Venom fighters sat with his knees under the radar screen. If he ejected his legs would be cut off by the radar cabinet. To counteract this they provided two ejector charges that had to be perfectly timed. The first charge beneath his seat stood him up and the second charge a split second later, beneath his feet, ejected him from the aircraft. This normally broke both of his legs but he was still alive. If the charges weren’t timed correctly his legs were torn off and he was unlikely to survive.
