Brown Boggs No 78 refurb
Over the New Years holidays I finally managed to refurbish the Brown Boggs No 78 shear that I picked up many years ago.
Attachment 21424Attachment 21425Attachment 21426Attachment 21427
I started by using a length of 3/4 x 2 Cold Rolled Flat Bar, milled the end to 0.6" x 1-1/2" to fit the handle socket, then milled a 1/8" radius round-over edge to all four sides to make the handle easier on the hands.
I then took a piece of 1/2" x 2" Hot rolled flat bar and bent the offset bends to make a hold down. The end was then marked out and cut so that it was parallel to the top of the lower knife blade.

The whole assembly was then power wire brushed to remove the rust, and multiple layers of flaking off paint, then it was sprayed with John Deer Green and Yellow Rust Paint.
I used 3/16 brass to make a Gib.
A length of 1/2" redi-rod was then added to make up a length stop.

Only step left is waiting for the replacement blades that are ordered to arrive.

Nice job. You can sharpen the old blades on these machines.

Normally I would agree with you, but after I had done all that , I cleaned up the old blades and realized one blade was cracked. Even though I am a millwright / welder by trade, I do not think I could manage to anneal this blade, then harden and temper it after welding, so I have defaulted to the "Pros from Dover"

I have a supplier that will make a new set of blades for me, and they are going to see if they can repair the old set as well, so I have a spare set. Blades are not cheap, but after all this getting the machine cleaned and ready, it would be a shame to walk away from it for the sake of a set of blades.
