This 20x30 cabin in Northern California, built by davidj on CountryPlans.com, is nice enough to double as a fulltime second home. It's built in a deeply-detailed build thread, with lots of help from neighbors and family.
David was a first-time builder, so he used a clever strategy of building an outhouse and 8x8 storage shed (with sleeping loft) first to gain experience.
Unique touches include collaged newspaper for kitchen cabinet faces, and a railing constructed from gas pipe (not cheap, but clever).
This cabin was built deep in snow country, and that meant a 1-hour ski in over the snow. Partway through the build, David purchased a tracked ATV, not as a toy of course, but, as a tool. After all, it must be a tool, David claims, because "it's yellow"!
