We don't have many cabin builds in our "Other" category, but this shipping container cabin in northern Wisconsin, built by Steve on TinCanCabin.com, certainly qualifies.

This is an extremely detailed blog covering the build of a shipping container cabin constructed from three new containers, and written from a techie/geek perspective.

There are a lot of limitations to using shipping containers, specifically the cost of new ones (around $3K per container), the dimensions (the containers are either 8'x20' or 8'x40'), and the construction limitations. Steve does an incredible job of detailing these issues, with his end analysis being that the key benefit here is security, and that, bought new, there are more cost-effective options.

The way to get around the high cost is of course to acquire used containers. However, this can be difficult to do, and by the time the shipping containers hit the used market, they can often be in questionable condition. Still, a great option for an enterprising builder.
