Clear view screens have been around for boats and trains since 1917...

I would think a larger disk (think a diameter just over twice the weight of the lens height) would work better. The spinning would then clear at the edges instead of leaving a small spot in the middle of the lens. It would also give you several surfaces to view through in case something stuck to the cover, and obscured the view.
