Carbide Insert File Guide

Well guys, I have another DIY knife making tool here! We use file guides like this for squaring up shoulders on hidden tang knives. These carbide inserts are tough!

That looks like a very nice tool and you obviously did a good job with a lot of attention to detail.

I have one question. Up until now I have seen file guides made with harden steel rollers instead of carbide. The file teeth will roll across them instead of the sliding that your carbide guides produce. I am wondering just how your files will hold up when used against the carbide which is harder than the file teeth. So I ask have you seen any bad effects on your files?

I suppose it use files with only one side cutting(it's impossible to see on the video), it's a lot of models made like that, if you use a normal file it comes very fast a one side cutting only… ;-)

Over time the carbide will wear your files much faster, but that's part of the game if you want square shoulders. These can also be used in combination with a flat platen on a belt grinder which is my preferred method.
