    For an inexpensive alternative try a small book called "an ABC of KNOTS, by Eric Franklin. In no way as complete as " Ashley's Book of Knots" but it does offer brief explanations of how to make about 60 various types of knots, and the reasons why one knot would be used over another knot the one added plus is it is only 4-1/2 by 6 inches and about 1/8" thick very easy to stow it in a backpack without taking up valuable space.
