    I think I would not let it's head get out the other end, grab the tail before it got that far into the pipe. Safer.
    But then, I wouldn't use a pipe anyway, a hoe with a 6 foot handle and sharp edge is what we used on the ranch.

    His first priority would be to get the snake away from the sheep without startling them. An agitated panicky flock of sheep with a cobra among them would most likely mean several would be bitten. since they would startle the snake.
    Almost all snakes will strike or use their defensive mechanism on something they know is too big to eat only as a last resort to get away. It was probably just using the sheep as a heat source.
    The man having a length of PVC pipe with him was probably a learned trait when tending his sheep. He probably knew the snake would crawl into a hole if one was presented in front of its nose.
