As a retired cop who wore a vest almost all the time, it reinforces the idea that they save lives. Very dangerous thing to do though, the bullet could easily have slid off the vest and entered his body with enough force left to kill or maim him.

Even if the bullet did not slide off there is enough trauma transferred to the body to cause death.

not necessarily, a lot would depend on the load and bullet weight. The g17 will happily chamber and fire most factory loads, unlike my finicky little Diamond pocket 9.
in the demonstration had he had the steel plate inserts the energy would have been partially absorbed by the woven fibers then dispersed even more by the steel plate it would still feel like being kicked in the gut by a Missouri Mule, but the impact area would have been over a larger area.
IF the Fiocchi 158gr FMJ is a subsonic round with muzzle energy of only 253 ftlbs however being full metal jacket would mean it would not deform as much upon impact it would loose much of its energy tearing through the fibers and probably dent a steel plate or on the other side of the coin say the Winchester Ranger 127 gr JHP+p+ has half again muzzle velocity as the heavier Fiocchi along with 441ftlbs energy leaving the muzzle. even though it would most likely fully flatten and probably fragment going through the fibers, it would still carry lots of energy through to the steel plate and the wearer would feel like he had been kicked by a Big red kangaroo he would bend double and puke his guts out initially
