"Clutch" for a drill press. To drill and tap smaller holes.

Continued with the issue about small holes and big drill press.

Made this "clutch". Its a prototype, but works.

It was a little difficult to get things to go straight, threads for the rod and chuck. Without a metal lathe.

But i think it can be done well enough with hand tools too.

Idea is very simple. Chuck in the drill press, holds the clutch from the 16mm pipe.

Axle inside the pipe is allowed to go round and move up and down.

Spring transmits the power from the pipe to the smaller chuck, when drill stucks, it doesn't break because spring starts to "slide" .

Spring also allows tapping tool to move up and down, that's important. Otherwise thread would break.

12mm axle.
12/28 5mm thick washers
60mm x 15mm x 1.5 spring.
Drill chuck with M12 thread.
16/12mm pipe. 12/28 2mm thick locking washer.

Nice idea Tuomas simple, but it works and you can always vary the spring to suit your needs.

Thank you. Yes. I bought bigger springs too. But that chuck doesn't hold bigger taps than M4. M3 and M4 goes with the same spring. I need to try it with bigger chuck someday.

The outer tube is connected to large chuck. The 'bolt' inside is free to rotate. The spring provides pressure for 'clutch' (the large washer and flange) If too much torque is applied, the 'bolt' will stop spinning and clutch slips. The outer tube keeps spinning. If the outer tube was threaded and a flanged nut used, the clutch would become adjustable as spring pressure can be adjusted. It's actually quite clever to adapt this to small drills/taps although also quite easy to 'go overboard' and add too many 'features' (I should make one but I know I would keep adding things defeating purpose of simple tool - LOL)
