Quite common in Europe, especially on high speed lines where solar gain heating and buckling is a huge safety issue.

Europe isn't renown for it's high temperatures nor high intensity sunlight, not like many much hotter regions. I've never seen that in Australia so I wonder what exactly does the applied product do to prevent rails from heat deformation?

Italy's high speed lines have to have it, and I'm told Spain is trialling it to stop buckling, the coating is highly reflective in the visible and I.R. bands and prevents much of the solar gain dirty/rusty rails have. They also have rail washing trains to keep it working.
