Not just any needle, but one that's been magnetized with a strong magnet. This probably works best. Or, you can magnetize by rubbing it in one direction on silk or wool or your hair using the static, or by aligning it with magnetic north on a hard surface then hitting it with a hammer (this actually works, I tried it). It's not very strong magnetism, but enough to make a bush compass. Just make sure there's no wind or water current to disrupt it. Carrying a magnetized needle with you at all times is a really good idea just in case. You can keep one in your car or stuck in your backpack. I have a friend that keeps them pushed into the soles of his shoes. It'll keep you from wandering around in a huge circle!
