Had that same experience on a road up to Timber Mountain in Nye County NV , driving a county 4x4 work truck, on the way down, right side rear tire, ground under it gave way, pulled back up by the other three. I was driving, woke the guy riding shotgun right up when the frame hit the edge.
Later the county road crew widened that goat trail for us so we could get to the repeater site a bit safer.
