I can take you to visit a lot of countries, where carrying a fridge on one's head is quite normal.
While helping out a guy who owned a moving company in New York City we regularly wrapped a rope of a sling around a full sized fridge held the ends in our hands with the rope passed over both shoulders lean forward and walk off with them on or backs.
But you may be correct in the "these days" statement.
