Why do so many crane operators feel they have to park as far away from their pick as possible and have their booms extended all the way to the limit then lift as high as possible before swinging to lower their load.

Most cranes are not equipped with free fall on the main line The results of the drum paying out the cable uncontrolled with only the brakes to arrest the fall could be disastrous. At best they have high speed powered payout.Originally Posted by Tooler2
An experienced operator normally will not get themselves in a situation that will destroy his equipment, but things like the ground giving away or something inside a load shifting or mechanical failures do happen. Overload sensors can sometimes get a crane in trouble when the operator suddenly finds himself nearing the maximum limit if he makes a sudden change, especially when lowering a load, stopping can cause the sensors to lock out the controls and not allow him to retract his boom or lower the load. If this happens about all he can do is ride it out or jump clear.
If you enter the wrong data for the number of sheaves or load lines on the block in the computer, the computer might tell the operator everything is fine according to the strain gage reading on hte main line until it isn't Then it is too late.

You mean like the emergency braking function on new cars for people to stupid to be driving in the first place?
When it comes to some people's driving their really needs to be stronger word for them than stupid.
