And, it had more to do with the cost of paper (all handmade) than the cost of posting a letter, though the Penny Post introduction in 1840 helped.

Pride and prejudice', I haven't thought about that book since high school. So many dramas films owe their roots to that book. Especially the soap operas of the 1960s.
The cross writing as was mentioned in serving as a means to save postage or paper back in the day. However, another little thought of aspect of quill and ink later pen and ink writing before the advent of the ball point pens could be used to portray something hardly anyone knows about today, with possibly the exception of calligraphers. Emphasis of certain words were made known without the use of extra punctuations. by the boldness and fine lines of the writing techniques. When the author felt the need to emphasize a particular word in a phrase or sentence, they would simply add a little more pressure when string the word. no need for adding (') or (") before or after the word's phrases, sentences or whole paragraphs.
Back when my handwriting was still legible, I had a wat to drive one of my teachers absolutely insane. I am left hand dominant while being moderately ambidextrous with my handwriting. Which I was forced to develop in the 4th grade due to a teacher who despised lefties, and a broken left wrist. Even though I didn't turn my paper and write downhill nor did I have a left leaning slant in my writing. I learned to write with my right hand, additionally I learned to write from right to left. Which really drove her insane after my left wrist had healed. Since when feeling particularly mischievous I would write a line normally with my left hand then on the next line continue from right to left on the next line with my right hand.
Never try to tell me it can't be done

The 1840 penny black is one of the holy grails of stamp collectors. However, even a messy, cancelled one will cost you $425 now.
