    Cup hook driver

If you've ever screwed a dozen cup hooks into the underside of an already installed shelf you might just appreciate this little tool.

As the picture shows, it consists of about 1.5" of 1/2" hex leaded steel. A 1/4" hex stub, 3/8" long has been milled on one end to fit the standard receiver on most electric screwdrivers. By starting with hex stock, I avoided the need to break out the dividing equipment. If you start with round stock you'll need to improvise some way to index.

The other end has a 1/8" slot, 3/4" long milled into it. These slot sizings were dictated somewhat by the cup hooks to be driven although nothing is too critical. If the slot is wider than your cup hook thickness it will still work. Mine is actually a bit wider intentionally since I intend to use this tool later to drive screw eyes.

Just in case, someone doesn't get it yet, here's a picture of the cup hook in place as it would be when being driven...

In each box of fasten master ledger lock or timber lock etc "screws" there is a 5/16 hex driver bit included. After a few boxes the drivers can add up. A slot cut in them works very well for this also.

I made one like this, years ago, and embedded a small magnet at the bottom of the slot to hold the cup hook or eye screw in place, and slipped a piece of rubber tubing over the outside of the driver.

That requires pushing the cup hook down into the driver, but it between the magnet and the tubing it keeps the cup hook or eye screw in place and pretty straight up and down, made it easier to install a few hundred of them under the eaves of the house for the Christmas lights my wife wanted put up.
