I wondered how many would pick up on that - you're the first.
While it allows precision advancement of the carriage, it also has several other important benefits:
- It prevents the mill slide from canting back, as you apply all pressure at the centre spindle line of the lathe.
- It reduces chatter as the mill slide is braced at the back/centre line.
Advancing the saddle with the carriage hand wheel is not a good idea, for all of the above reasons.
