DIY Rope Splicing Fid

This is the twelfth episode of the 18’ sailboat build and shows how you can save a boat load of money by fabricating your own Rope Splicing Fid. What is this? A rope splicing fid is a hand tool used to help splice rope together. It is also used to separate tightly strands of rope knotted together in order to pass other strands of line through the knot. This is precisely what I’ll be using my rope splicing fid for in order to make my own boat fenders out of old, worn out rope.

Once again, I’ll be re-purposing old discarded materials to save myself some money and keep yet more material out of the landfills. Of course, I must make the tool (rope splicing fid) first before I can begin making rope fenders. The beauty of this whole concept is I’ll be making the rope splicing fid in this video using leftover, scrap materials. Once again, I will have reduced the quantity of materials going to the landfills and will have saved myself more money.
